Interlibrary Loans

How to avail of this service and submit a request

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service facilitates the borrowing of books, articles, and other materials that are not available within SETU’s libraries by sourcing them from other libraries, both within a network of academic institutions and sometimes beyond.

This service is particularly valuable for researchers, students, and faculty who need to access specialised resources. Users can request materials online through the library’s ILL request forms, and the library staff will manage the borrowing process, including tracking and returning items.

Please note that the processes are different in Carlow/Wexford and Waterford at the moment and choose from the options below according to your home library.

Registered lecturing staff, final year undergraduate as well as postgraduate students can submit an ILL request via the online request form which is available here. Requestors will be notified by email when the requested item has arrived and is available for collection.

How many items can I request?

You can request up to three items at any one time. This can include a combination of print books and articles. Each item requires you to complete a separate online request form.

There is no charge for using the inter-library loan service at SETU Carlow/Wexford campuses.

If an item (book, journal, chapter etc.) is unavailable from SETU Waterford Libraries, we can source that item on your behalf from another library or supplier. The service is available to SETU Waterford staff and students and to external borrowers by arrangement, and is known as an Interlibrary Loan.

How to Request

Before you submit the request form, please check our Library Catalogue and our A-Z Journals for availability. If you are sure we don’t have the item in question, proceed by filling out the request form as detailed as possible. Journal articles are generally supplied within 3 days, books usually take about 7-10 days. You will be notified by e-mail or telephone when your item arrives. Interlibrary loans must be returned on time or a fine may apply.

Copyright

Do not sign the Copyright Declaration form if your article request is intended for commercial purposes (applies to any activity that is directly or indirectly income generating).

In this instance, you are required to contact the interlibrary loans team prior to submitting your request so that appropriate copyright fees can be applied. Users of SETU Waterford Libraries interlibrary loan service have a personal responsibility to become familiar with copyright law as it affects them.

Copyright legislation restricts the amount that can be copied to:

  • 10% or one chapter from a book and
  • up to one article from any issue of a journal
SETU Waterford Libraries cannot take responsibility for delays in receipt of items which are beyond our control.
