What is Protocols.io?

Protocols.io is an open platform designed to help researchers create, manage, share, and publish detailed research protocols. It provides a collaborative environment where methods can be developed, refined, versioned, and shared with colleagues or the wider research community. The platform supports both private collaboration and public dissemination of research methods, helping to improve reproducibility and research integrity.

Unlike traditional methods sections in journal articles, Protocols.io allows researchers to publish detailed step-by-step procedures that can be updated over time while preserving previous versions. Published protocols can also receive a DOI, making them citable research outputs.

Supporting Open Research at SETU

At SETU, researchers are encouraged to adopt open research practices that enhance the visibility, transparency, and impact of their work. Protocols.io supports these goals by enabling researchers to share detailed methodologies, publish citable protocols with DOIs, and make research processes more accessible to colleagues and the wider research community.

Using Protocols.io can help researchers:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to research integrity and reproducibility.
  • Support compliance with funder and publisher expectations around transparency and open science.
  • Increase the visibility and discoverability of research methods through DOI assignment and indexing.
  • Facilitate collaboration within SETU and with national and international research partners.
  • Create reusable research outputs that can be cited independently of journal publications.

By sharing protocols openly, SETU researchers can contribute to a more transparent and collaborative research culture while increasing the reach and impact of their scholarly work.
